Monroe Academy Art Program

The Monroe Academy Art Department provides instruction to all grade levels. Currently, classes are provided to all Elementary grades (3K-5th Grades). A Middle School course is offered to 8th graders that is a cross -curricular scrap booking class with heavy emphasis on genealogy and Georgia history. On the High School level, Monroe Academy offers two electives. Art Appreciation focuses on art histories and art reproduction efforts, while Scrap booking provides an in depth study of paper and multimedia techniques. Certain grades do not currently take art at Monroe Academy due to necessary study halls or core curriculum requirements. Every grade level represented in the Monroe Academy art program participates in numerous art contests on local and state levels. In fact, last year our students represented our school in fourteen different contests. Some examples of this include the Fire Safety Poster Contest, Forsythia Festival Logo Contest, Lion’s Club International Peace Poster Contest, Pumpkin Patch Contest, Cherry Blossom “Think Pink” Contest, Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest, and Arbor Day “Trees Are Terrific” Contest. Needless to say, we are very active and aggressively working on projects on a very regular basis! Each year the art department strives to improve our level of proficiency and our diversity of techniques and media.
For
the past nine years, the Monroe Academy Art Department has been
developed by the art instructor, Mrs. Monta Rae Purser. Mrs. Purser is
has her B.S. in Education with emphasis on art and language arts as well
as a minor in art. She is a native of Barnesville, Georgia where she
currently resides with her husband, Steven, and her three children,
Scott, Aaron, and David. Her eldest child graduated from Monroe Academy
last spring while her other children currently attend. In her free time,
Mrs. Purser is very involved with her church and community. Her other
passions include working with youth camps and missionary work in Ukraine
and Belize. These experiences have helped enhance our art activities by
introducing fresh ideas and cultural connections in the classroom. Mrs.
Purser is also actively and enthusiastically striving to enhance Monroe
Academy’s art program by adding to the curriculum every year. This
includes the introduction of new techniques, media and instructional
material. High school students carve, wood burn, cast plaster, and quill
paper due to this effort to grow the art program. Who knows what the
future may hold? Mrs. Purser is always willing to listen to new ideas
and implement them where possible….and of course there is always room
for your assistance in creating displays, promoting the arts in the
local community, and in contributing to the expansion of our art
facilities. It is the desire of the Monroe Academy family to provide our
students with the best art education possible.
